In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, accountability has become the linchpin for maintaining integrity and trust. Recent events surrounding Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, underscore the imperative of holding individuals and platforms accountable for their actions and content.

The storm began with a cascade of major advertisers, including Disney, Paramount, and Apple, halting their advertising on X. This decisive move followed Musk’s public endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory, sending shockwaves through the social media realm. Even tech giant IBM joined the ranks of those suspending their ads, citing the discovery of their content alongside pro-Nazi material on the platform.

The response from X was swift, accusing media watchdog group Media Matters of misrepresentation and threatening a lawsuit. However, the gravity of the situation lies in the broader issue of accountability in the digital age. Each case, like the present dispute between Musk’s platform and advertisers, is specific and dependent on various variables and circumstances.

This incident is not an isolated one. A chorus of UN-appointed human rights experts has raised their voices, urging accountability from social media giants. Figures like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Tim Cook are explicitly named, with a call to center human rights, racial justice, and ethics in their business models.

The experts highlight a pressing need for social media companies to tackle hate speech and discrimination. The recent surge in the use of racial slurs on Twitter, following Elon Musk’s acquisition, serves as a glaring example. The Network Contagion Research Institute reported a nearly 500% increase in the use of a racial slur within a 12-hour period.

The onus is on these platforms to declare policies and enforce them rigorously. The gap between stated policies and actual enforcement is evident in the approval of inflammatory ads and the spread of electoral disinformation on various platforms. The call for accountability is not a hindrance to free speech but a necessity to prevent real-world harm resulting from the spread of misinformation.

The experts acknowledge efforts, such as Meta’s establishment of an oversight board in 2020, but caution that its effectiveness can only be gauged over time. They stress the need for continuous commitment at the highest levels to review and modify tools combating racial hatred online.

In a world where young minds spend a significant part of their lives online, the impact of racial hatred on social media is more than just digital noise. It perpetuates race-based traumatic stress and trauma, undermining confidence in using social media platforms.

As we stand at this crossroads, the question is not just about content moderation but about addressing deeper issues of racial hatred advocacy, lack of accountability, and efforts to promote tolerance. Social media, if wielded responsibly, can be a force for good, fostering tolerance and building just and equitable societies.

In the wake of the turmoil surrounding X, it becomes apparent that online safety is not just an individual responsibility but a collective endeavor. Musk is now reaping the consequences of neglecting accountability, a stark reminder for everyone navigating the digital landscape: our actions online echo in the real world, and a commitment to accountability is the cornerstone of a safer online experience.
