As the world marks International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, the global community is called upon to renew its commitment to achieving gender equality. This year, under the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress‘, the focus is squarely on the necessity of empowering women to drive societal, economic, and health advancements.

International Women’s Day isn’t merely a celebration of women’s achievements. It is a global call to action for accelerating gender parity, highlighting the ongoing struggle for equality and the need for continued advocacy and action worldwide. The theme emphasizes the critical need to invest in women across all sectors—recognizing their pivotal role in fostering progress and prosperity.

The origin of International Women’s Day dates back to the early 20th century, stemming from the labor movements in North America and Europe. Over the years, it has evolved into a global acknowledgment of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political contributions. The United Nations began officially recognizing the day in 1975, amplifying its significance on the international stage.

This year’s campaign theme, #InspireInclusion, emphasizes the importance of diversity and empowerment in driving meaningful change. It emphasizes the value of inclusivity in advancing gender equality and dismantling barriers that hinder women’s progress.

The statement by Ms. Saima Wazed, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, highlights the critical intersection of women’s health and overall well-being. Investing in women’s health is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity. This dual perspective emphasizes the critical importance of prioritizing women’s health, addressing both ethical considerations and its impact on the broader economy. Yet, the region faces challenges in allocating adequate resources to address women’s health needs effectively.

Despite some progress, gender inequalities persist, particularly in access to healthcare services, education, and economic opportunities. Women continue to bear the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work, hindering their full participation in economic and political areas.

The call to action extends beyond healthcare, extending to areas such as education, employment, and leadership. Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do—it is also the smart thing to do to build a more prosperous and equitable society.

Investing in women’s health yields multigenerational benefits, impacting not only the current generation but also shaping the future of communities and nations. Better-informed mothers contribute to healthier families, fostering a cycle of positive health outcomes and knowledge dissemination.

On International Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to invest in women, accelerate progress, and strive for a world where every woman and girl can thrive. Together, let us inspire inclusion, celebrate achievements, and drive meaningful change towards gender equality.

As the world reflects on the significance of International Women’s Day, it is evident that the journey towards gender equality is far from over. Let us seize this opportunity to amplify the voices of women, advocate for their rights, and work tirelessly towards a more just and inclusive world.
