President Donald Trump has dismissed General CQ Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a sweeping overhaul of military leadership. The decision, announced on social media, also includes the removal of five other top officers.
Gen Brown, the second Black officer to hold the position, was appointed by former President Joe Biden. His dismissal aligns with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s stance against what he calls a “woke” military, specifically targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
New Leadership Direction
Hegseth justified the firings, stating: “Under President Trump, we are putting in place new leadership that will focus our military on its core mission of deterring, fighting, and winning wars.” Trump has nominated Air Force Lt Gen Dan Caine, a seasoned F-16 pilot and former CIA associate director for military affairs, to replace Gen Brown.
In addition to Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Adm Lisa Franchetti and Air Force Gen Jim Slife were also dismissed. Adm Franchetti, the first woman to lead the Navy, was among several high-ranking officers previously appointed by Biden.
Military Overhaul and Policy Battles
Trump’s administration has consistently aimed to restructure military leadership. One of his first acts in office was firing the first female commandant of the Coast Guard, citing concerns about an excessive focus on diversity initiatives.
In a related policy move, the Pentagon announced budget cuts and the termination of 5,400 probationary employees. Meanwhile, a federal court in Maryland temporarily blocked Trump’s attempts to ban DEI programs, with Judge Adam Abelson ruling that such directives may violate free speech protections.
With these moves, Trump is reshaping military leadership to reflect his vision, setting the stage for further shake-ups in the Pentagon.
