Diplomacy remains on the table as tensions continue over Iran’s nuclear program.
JD Vance said that Donald Trump still prefers a diplomatic solution with Iran, even as the United States keeps other options available. His remarks came ahead of another round of nuclear talks between the two countries, according to Reuters.
Vance said Trump has been clear about one key goal: Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon. He added that the president wants to achieve that outcome through negotiations, but the U.S. is prepared to use additional tools if diplomacy fails.
Officials from the United States and Iran are scheduled to meet in Geneva for a third round of talks focused on Tehran’s nuclear activities. The meeting is seen as another important step in efforts to ease tensions and reach a possible agreement.
Vance said he hopes Iranian leaders take Trump’s preference for diplomacy seriously during the negotiations. He described the talks as an attempt to reach what he called a “reasonable settlement” between both sides.
When asked whether the U.S. would want Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, to step down, Vance declined to comment directly. Instead, he emphasized that current efforts are centered on diplomatic engagement and preventing nuclear escalation.
The renewed discussions come amid ongoing global concern about nuclear proliferation and regional stability. Talks between Washington and Tehran have moved in cycles for years, often influenced by political changes and disagreements over sanctions, inspections, and security guarantees.
For now, U.S. officials signal that negotiation remains the priority, even as pressure and strategic options stay in place.
