The Middle East was shaken overnight by strikes that changed Iran’s leadership in an instant.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli attacks, according to Iranian state media reports on March 1, 2026. The strikes targeted sites in and around Tehran, marking a dramatic escalation in the widening conflict.

Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the region. As supreme leader, he held ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces, judiciary and key state institutions. His death leaves a major power vacuum and sets off a high-stakes race to choose his successor.

Iran responded quickly. Tehran launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and the United Arab Emirates, with reports of casualties. Israeli officials said their warplanes hit Tehran again following Iran’s response.

U.S. officials confirmed American involvement in the strikes but expressed doubt that the killing would immediately lead to regime change in Iran. Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership began emergency meetings to stabilize the country and manage the transition of power.

The conflict has also rattled global markets. Oil prices jumped as fears grew that fighting could disrupt shipping routes in the Gulf. The region is a key hub for global energy supplies, and any long-term instability could push prices higher.

Khamenei’s death marks Iran’s biggest political shock since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Analysts say the coming days will be critical. Iran’s constitution lays out a process for selecting a new supreme leader, but the decision rests largely with the Assembly of Experts, a powerful clerical body.

As missiles fly and leaders weigh their next moves, many in the region fear the violence could spread further.
