RCMP seize 2,000 pounds of illicit cannabis near Maple Creek

RCMP in Saskatchewan stopped a vehicle on Highway 1 near Maple Creek on September 4 and seized 1,928 pounds of dried cannabis along with 56 pounds of hashish and 15 litres of THC resin.

The Roving Traffic Unit was running safety patrols when officers pulled over an eastbound vehicle at about 12:30 p.m. after an equipment violation under the Saskatchewan Vehicle Equipment Regulations, the RCMP said in a release dated September 14.

An adult male told investigators his trip started in British Columbia and was headed for Ontario, according to the release. He was arrested at the scene.

The RCMP charged Istvan Mikula, 56, of Rosedale, B.C. The release lists one count of possession of illicit cannabis for the purpose of distribution under section 9(2) of the Cannabis Act, two counts of possession of an illicit cannabis derivative for the purpose of distribution under the same section, and one count of possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000 under section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The Maple Creek detachment helped with the investigation. The release says Mikula will make his next court appearance in Maple Creek on January 14, 2027.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
