Canpotex invests $500M in Vancouver port expansion

Canpotex broke ground September 25 on a $500 million upgrade at Neptune Bulk Terminals in the Port of Vancouver, according to a Government of Saskatchewan release.

Premier Scott Moe and Canpotex president and chief executive Gordon McKenzie attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The Saskatoon-based potash marketer will replace and refurbish terminal equipment. The upgrade will strengthen the supply chain for potash mined in Saskatchewan and shipped overseas through the port.

Moe said the investment will help move more Saskatchewan potash to international markets and support jobs and economic growth in the province. McKenzie said the upgrade means Canpotex can reliably export Saskatchewan potash through Neptune to overseas farmers for decades.

Canpotex markets potash mined by Mosaic and Nutrien, the province’s two biggest producers. The release said Canpotex has supplied more than 40 countries abroad for over 50 years. It has shipped 325 million metric tonnes over its lifetime to farmers abroad.

Peter Xotta, president and chief executive of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, said the upgrade “will better connect Saskatchewan potash to key markets in South America, the Indo-Pacific and beyond.”

The release put the value of potash exports at $9 billion in 2025, an increase of 13.5 per cent over 2024.
