Saul Laliberte death inquest set for Prince Albert

A coroner’s inquest into the death of Saul Laliberte, 33, will run in Prince Albert from October 26 to 30, the Government of Saskatchewan said in a news release on September 28. The release says Laliberte was found unresponsive in a Prince Albert Police Service cell on November 7, 2021.

Hearings will take place at the Coronet Hotel on 2nd Avenue West. The first day begins at 10 a.m. Coroner Frederick Kovach will preside and set the start times for the remaining days.

According to the release, paramedics were called and staff began life-saving efforts. Paramedics took over his care and moved him to Victoria Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The release gives Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999 as the basis for the inquest. It says the section requires the Chief Coroner to hold one when a person dies as an inmate of a jail or correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied the death was entirely natural and could not have been prevented. The release does not give a cause of death.
