Leader RCMP are investigating after an SUV with flashing lights tried to pass as a police vehicle near Lancer, Saskatchewan, on Highway 32.

Police received the report at about 9:15 p.m. on October 13, according to an RCMP release. The report described blue and red flashing lights and what looked like an attempted traffic stop. Police were told the SUV was red with silver rims.

The release says a truck pulled onto the shoulder of Highway 32 after its driver saw emergency lights behind it. The SUV stopped behind the truck.

No one from the SUV approached, and the truck later drove away. The driver had no contact with the SUV’s occupants, the release says.

Police have determined the SUV has no connection to any agency working in the area.

Officers gathered surveillance video of the SUV in Abbey. RCMP say the footage was recorded before the SUV’s encounter with the truck.

Police have no descriptions of the occupants. The release includes a photo of the SUV.

The SUV has not been found. The investigation continues.

Impersonating police is illegal, RCMP say. Anyone who believes an imitation police vehicle is following them should contact RCMP right away. A driver can ask an officer to show a badge and ID card, both showing the same regimental number.

RCMP are asking anyone who pulled over for or encountered the SUV to come forward. Tips can go to Leader RCMP at 310-RCMP, or anonymously to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
